TNY-360 Documentation

Materials

The TNY-360 uses different 3D-printing materials according to the mechanical role of each part.

In this section, we will explain the mechanical roles of the materials used in the robot, and how they affect the design and performance of the robot.

Materials used in the robot

MaterialMain role
PETGStructural parts and, in the current robot, most printed components
PLAPossible choice for aesthetic parts, because their mechanical demands are lower
TPUFlexible parts such as feet where compliance and impact absorption are useful

Our robots use PETG throughout many parts, but the material choice can be adapted when a component benefits from flexibility or from a different visual finish.

Design trade-offs

Material selection affects:

  • rigidity and unwanted flex;
  • resistance to impacts and repeated loads;
  • the behavior of clips and mechanical interfaces;
  • the grip and deformation of the feet;
  • print settings, tolerances, and replacement parts.

Material choice is part of the mechanism

The same geometry can behave differently when printed in a rigid material or a flexible one. Replacement parts should therefore use a material appropriate to their intended mechanical role.
